Department of Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy is the science of studying the drug materials produced from natural sources, and in general such materials may be herbal, microbial, and/or any other sources of natural origin. The branch is focusing on natural products research, traditional medicine, ethnobotany and phytochemistry from plant, marine and other life origins on both analytical and preparative scale. Department of Pharmacognosy is committed to provide outstanding training in the natural sciences through accredited programs and to conduct quality research at international level. Our Department is equipped with efficient devices and instruments, offering scientific research opportunities at the research labs under the supervision of experienced subject specialists and competent academic staff.

The most important research activities of the Department of Pharmacognosy are as follow:

• Evaluating the biological and pharmacological effects of herbs, plants, and microorganisms;
• Isolating and determining the active biological & pharmacological structures of natural microbial and herbal resources;
• Analyzing qualitatively & quantitatively the herbal plants and their related products;
• Identifying the Herbal drugs of Iran;
• Formulating the herbal drug products;
• Producing active biological products from microbial resources;
• Changing and transforming drug compounds made by microorganisms;
• Cell and herbal tissue culture;
• Producing active biological products from microbial resources;
• Performing enzyme technology;
• Producing, distilling, formulating, and analyzing bio-medicines
